Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Chatham-Kent police say automated licence plate reader technology helped them quickly find a vehicle and arrest three people after a theft from a Best Buy store.
Police received a report at about 3:11 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, that two sound bars, valued at about $3,000, had been stolen from the St. Clair Street store. While officers were gathering information about the suspect vehicle, the technology detected it on Queens Line. Officers stopped it and took three people into custody without incident.
Police say the technology helped them respond quickly and recover investigative leads. The three people were later released with court dates pending.
Police say they use the technology in accordance with provincial legislation and privacy requirements. They say it captures licence plate information visible from public roadways and helps officers find vehicles linked to criminal investigations, stolen vehicles, suspended drivers and public safety concerns.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-352-1234.
