Wallaceburg construction starts today

The road work is set to begin along McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg today.

Traffic will be reduced to a single lane while construction is taking place.

The project consists of the road reconstruction of McNaughton Avenue from Murray Street to the south limits of the Lord Selkirk Bridge; and Murray Street from McNaughton Avenue to 600m south of Baseline Road.

Huron Construction of Chatham is the Contractor for this project and it is anticipated to start on Tuesday, April 18 with a completion date of July 31, 2017. As part of the project the following work will be completed:

– Removal and replacement of asphalt pavements,

– Removal and replacement of existing curb & gutter, existing sidewalks, new sidewalk installation,

– Traffic signal improvements

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent was successful in obtaining funding for the road reconstruction of McNaughton Avenue and a portion of Murray Street in the Community of Wallaceburg, under the Ministry of Transportation Connecting Links Program.

401 interchange construction begins

Reconstruction of the Highway 401/ Highway 40/ Communication Road interchange will result in a number of changes for local drivers beginning in Mid-April and lasting until late autumn.

Effective today April 18, Highway 40 will close at Creek Road/Pinehurst Line north of the interchange and Communication Road will close south of the interchange at Horton Line except for local traffic.

Municipal services won’t be affected by the closure and reconstruction work at the Highway 401/ Highway 40/ Communication Road interchange.

Provincial Offences Court and the Harwich Transfer Station, located immediately north of Horton Line, will remain open for service throughout the interchange reconstruction which is expected to last until November.

Residents are reminded that they can pay fines at any municipal service centre or at the Civic Centre in Chatham during regular office hours if they want to avoid the detour. As well, all fines can be paid on-line at www.paytickets.ca

The Court remains open and operational with all business proceeding as usual. Those with a trial date must still attend. For questions about any other matters, including requests for trial, extensions and re-openings, the public is encouraged to call the office at 519-352-8484 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There will be no changes at the transfer station, as residents will continue to have full access to the waste and recycling facility.

Lots of volunteers, can always use more

Volunteer Appreciation Week is being recognized next week from April 23 to April 29 across Canada and the United States.

The Chatham-Kent Salvation Army will be celebrating the occasion with three separate events, one in Chatham, one in Ridgetown and one in Wallaceburg. The Wallaceburg event will be held on Thursday, April 27 at their 600 Lowe Ave. facility from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Chatham event is Sunday, April 23 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 46 Orangewood Blvd. and the Ridgetown event is Tuesday, April 25 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 18 Main Street.

Volunteer Canada says: “In 2017, volunteering comes in many forms and is as diverse as Canada itself. Someone who shovels their neighbour’s laneway or who brings a lost pet to the animal shelter is helping to build a stronger community. Sometimes we miss recognizing these people as volunteers, because they do not occupy a formal role within an organization or group.”

We asked our reader’s if they volunteered, and here are the results:

Do you volunteer?

Yes – all the time (on a committee, board, etc.) 38.1% (32 votes)

Used to, but not anymore 23.81% (20 votes)

Yes – once in a while/handful of times a year 22.62% (19 votes)

No – never 15.47% (13 votes)

Total Votes: 84
