Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Tilbury on Sunday evening, September 5, 2021.
“The Chatham-Kent Police were called to the area of Laurentia Drive and Rose Avenue, Tilbury, around 10:50 p.m. for reports of a male armed and in distress,” Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege.
“Upon arrival, an altercation ensued which resulted in the male being shot by police. Officers immediately attended to the male, administering first aid. The male was transported to area hospital with life-threatening injuries.”
As a result, the Special Investigations Unit invoked their mandate and has taken carriage of the investigation, Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say.
SIU officials say they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the serious injuries suffered by a 62-year-old man after a Chatham-Kent Police Service officer discharged a firearm last night in Tilbury.
SIU officials say preliminary information suggests the following:
– At approximately 10:52 p.m. on September 5, 2021, police responded to a call that indicated a man armed with guns would be at the intersection of Laurentia Drive and Rose Avenue in Tilbury.
– Officers saw the man with a crowbar outside his residence on Laurentia Drive.
– Officers deployed their Conducted Energy Weapons at the man without success. Following that, an officer discharged a firearm.
– Officers administered first aid. Upon arrival, paramedics took over care of the man and he was transported to hospital.
SIU officials say four investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
“Investigators are canvassing the area and appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them,” SIU officials said in a media release.
“Please contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The SIU is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.”
