From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
Something that is a constant problem in our world today is conflict in the workplace, especially as it relates to the relationship between the employer and the employee.
We don’t always handle conflict well, and when we don’t, there is usually collateral damage.
I came across a great truth frequently while reading Ecclesiastes 10:4, which says, “If a ruler’s anger rises against you, do not leave your post; calmness can lay great errors to rest.”
Another Bible version uses the word “composure” for the word calmness.
The root meaning of this word calmness, or composure, means ‘medicine’ or ‘to mend by stitching.’
It also means to yield.
Think of how many office blow-ups and break room disagreements could end amicably if this principle was followed more often.
Our calmness and composure can heal a broken situation.
I once had a job in a restaurant where one of the managers was a passionate man who didn’t suffer fools gladly and would get quite irritated when things were done incorrectly.
He was right and his attention to excellence was needed in that restaurant, but his times of irritation made for an uncomfortable atmosphere amongst the other employees.
However, there was one particular employee who had a knack for bringing a volatile situation under control.
His composure in these times allayed the manager’s anger and brought levity to the air.
All of us in the working world would do well with a little more calmness in our repertoire!
