TBT: Wallaceburg’s M109A4 self-propelled Howitzer

In recognition of Wallaceburg’s 150th anniversary this year, the Wallaceburg & District Museum has launched a new feature on social media: ‘150 Facts, for 150 Years’.

Here is one of their recent posts:

“Did you know that Wallaceburg’s “tank” parked next to the cenotaph is not actually a tank at all? It is a M109A4 self-propelled Howitzer. The main difference between a tank and self-propelled artillery is that a tank is designed to be engaged directly, and typically has larger shells. Self-propelled artillery is typically meant to provide support to an area with smaller shells from farther away – which leads into another interesting fact unique to Wallaceburg’s monument.

As the crow flies, the monument is approximately 15km from the U.S. border. In working condition (which ours is not) the M109A4 Howitzer has a firing range of up to 25km. With these numbers in mind, the gun of the Howitzer is symbolically facing AWAY from the border.”
