The Bkejwanong Water Walk will take place on Saturday, March 22, as part of World Nibi Day, honoring water through sacred ceremony and collective action.
The event begins with a Sunrise Ceremony at 6:30 a.m. near the warming shelter at Bridge Road. Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, and food or coffee donations are welcome for a communal gathering after the ceremony.
Following the ceremony, a relay-style Water Walk will commence at 9:00 a.m. from the old ferry crossing/landing on the Snye River (New Ferry Rd./Bridge Rd.), concluding around lunchtime or early afternoon at Willow Beach. Attendees are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, and kwewag (women) are encouraged to wear skirts in keeping with tradition.
This Water Walk is a sacred ceremony giving thanks to G’zhhemnido (Creator) for the gift of life and clean water from Mother Earth’s waterways, rain, snow, fog, and mist. Participants will pray for balance and the continued blessings water provides to all of creation.
The event will conclude with a feast and closing ceremony at the United Church around lunchtime/early afternoon. Food donations are welcomed.
The walk will proceed rain or shine.
