New wood sculpture unveiled in Rondeau

A new wood sculpture, created by world-renowned chainsaw carver and Bothwell resident Mike Winia, was unveiled recently in Rondeau, marking the launch of a unique public art initiative rolling out across Chatham-Kent.

To create this piece, Winia collaborated with fellow carvers Paul and Jacob Frenette, stars of the television series Carver Kings, Municipal officials say.

The carving, which depicts two turtles sitting in a canoe, celebrates the natural beauty and heritage of the region, and is the first in a series of 15 planned installations that will be located in communities throughout Chatham-Kent over the coming months.

This carving sits in front of Rondeau Joe’s Pub near the entrance to Rondeau Provincial Park.

The initiative aims to blend art, community identity, and natural materials in a way that draws residents and visitors alike to explore the region. Funding for this project came from the Councillor Ward Funding Program through Hydro One.

“This carving is not just a beautiful piece of art—it’s a symbol of community pride, partnership and creativity,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff, in a media release.

“It’s also an interactive piece. We’re encouraging people to stop in, sit in the canoe, take photos, and share them to let people know about the great things happening in Rondeau. We’re thrilled to see this project begin in Rondeau and look forward to seeing how it grows across our municipality.”

The next two carvings are already in development and are scheduled to be unveiled in June in Wallaceburg and Ridgetown.
