Community rally planned in Dresden over Bill 5, lack of consultation

Community members are planning a rally in Rotary Park next week to protest the lack of consultation surrounding development activities in Dresden and to call for the repeal of Bill 5.

Organized by Dresden CARED, the “Repeal Bill 5, Defend Dresden” rally is set for Thursday, July 3, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Rotary Park, located at 136 St. George St. in Dresden.

The protest comes after York 1 began moving equipment onto a local site this week, the group says.

According to Dresden CARED, this occurred without consultation with Walpole Island First Nation, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, or the local community.

Confirmed speakers at the event include Marit Stiles, Leader of the Ontario NDP and Official Opposition, as well as Ward 4 Councillors Rhonda Jubenville and Jamie McGrail.

Representatives from Walpole Island First Nation are also expected to speak.
