In recognition of Wallaceburg’s 150th anniversary this year, the Wallaceburg & District Museum has launched a new feature on social media: ‘150 Facts, for 150 Years’.
Here is one of their recent photos and details:
“The Wallaceburg News was established in 1896 after W. Colwell’s unsuccessful bid to purchase the Wallaceburg Herald.
Undeterred, he decided to start his own newspaper and the Wallaceburg News was established.
For awhile the town had two weekly newspapers, until the owner of the Herald decided to sell again – this time Colwell was successful.
Around the same time, Colwell purchased a fancy goods and bookstore from Mr. Bremner, which he renamed Colwell’s Five Cents to a Dollar Store.
Both businesses were family run with his sons, Charles and George, running the newspaper.
William, Fred, and Alice ran the store.
