CK Public Health warns of increased drug poisonings in Chatham-Kent

Chatham-Kent Public Health is alerting the community to a rise in drug poisonings and unexpected reactions to substances in the region, prompting renewed warnings about the dangers of the unregulated drug supply.

Officials say the current supply is unpredictable and constantly changing, increasing the risk of serious harm or death for people who use substances. In some cases, drugs may be contaminated or cut with powerful opioids or other substances that users are not expecting.

“The reality is that people may not know what they’re taking, and even a small amount can be dangerous,” CK Public Health stated in the alert. “This is a reminder that the risk is always present when using unregulated substances.”

In the event of an overdose, public health urges people to call 911 immediately and administer naloxone if an opioid overdose is suspected. More than one dose may be required. People are also advised to stay with the individual and offer assistance until paramedics arrive.

For those who use substances, CK Public Health recommends taking safety precautions such as not using alone, using with a friend, or having someone check in. Starting with a small “test dose,” using test strips to check for contaminants, and avoiding mixing drugs are also encouraged. People are advised to be aware of their personal tolerance and to have naloxone nearby.

“Sharing this information can help raise awareness and reduce the risk of overdose in our community,” officials said.

Free naloxone kits are available locally, and details on where to find them can be accessed at ckphu.com/naloxone.
