From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
Don’t you just love it when you come across something that puts life into a different perspective and changes the way you think?
This happened to me recently when I came across a neat little quote from the late poet, Ellen Sturgis Hooper.
Here is what she said: “I slept, and dreamed that life was joy; I woke, and found that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”
Some people work at jobs that are drudgery and toil and their only reason for being there is to pay the bills and put food on the table.
I get it, though, that we sometimes must take what is offered in order to make ends meet.
But what if we approached our jobs with an attitude of joy and gratefulness?
The ultimate example of this type of approach to life is none other than our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.
His delight was to serve those He came to save.
He willingly washed His disciples’ feet on the very night in which he was betrayed and then subsequently was put to death.
His willingness to go all the way to the cross for our sins was actually prompted by the joy of knowing He would gather those He loved back to Himself.
We are encouraged to put our focus on Him, as it says in Hebrews 12:2-3: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the JOY set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
I think Ellen Sturgis Hooper was really on to something when she penned these words so long ago.
Let’s get busy with serving with a renewed attitude and find the joy that’s waiting for us to discover!
