Chatham-Kent firefighters continue annual fire safety checks through CHiRP program

Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue is once again hitting the streets this month for its annual CHiRP (Community Home Fire Safety Check) program, marking the fourth consecutive year firefighters have canvassed local neighbourhoods to promote fire safety.

The program provides residents with valuable fire safety education in the comfort of their own homes. During these visits, firefighters inspect, test and replace smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as needed — free of charge.

Firefighters will be canvassing several Chatham-Kent communities throughout October, beginning in Blenheim and surrounding areas on Oct. 4, followed by Wheatley on Oct. 11, Tilbury on Oct. 16, and Merlin and Tupperville on Oct. 18. The month wraps up with visits to Chatham, Wallaceburg and Ridgetown on Oct. 25.

“We do more than just check alarms,” says Community Safety Officer Whitney Burk. “We talk to residents about their safety needs. I can’t emphasize enough the simplicity, effectiveness, and cost-free nature of the CHiRP Checks. The entire process typically takes no more than 10–15 minutes and provides reassurance that you and your loved ones are safeguarded against fire and carbon monoxide dangers.”

To raise awareness, firefighters will also visit schools across the municipality throughout Fire Prevention Month, distributing promotional items and educating students on fire safety practices.

Residents can schedule a CHiRP Home Safety Check by visiting ckfire.ca or calling 519-360-1998.
