Chatham-Kent police issue Halloween safety reminder for parents

As Halloween approaches, the Chatham-Kent Police Service is reminding parents and guardians to stay alert and take extra precautions to help keep children safe while trick-or-treating.

Police are urging families to carefully inspect all treats before allowing children to eat them. Officers advise checking for tears, punctures, or pinholes in wrappers, candies that appear discoloured or have an unusual smell or texture, and avoiding homemade treats from unknown sources.

Other signs of potential tampering include treats that feel unusually heavy, sticky, or powdery, as well as packaging that looks resealed, mismatched, or unfamiliar.

“Remember: When in doubt, throw it out,” police said in the safety reminder.

The service encouraged all families to stay alert and stay safe this Halloween.
