Update: Snow squall watch issued for Chatham-Kent

Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch for Chatham-Kent and Rondeau Park, with heavy lake effect snow expected late tonight through Tuesday morning.

Forecasters warn of total accumulations between 15 and 30 centimetres, with locally higher amounts possible. Visibility may be significantly reduced at times due to blowing snow.

Lake effect snow off Lake Huron is expected to begin affecting Lambton County tonight and may reach locations near the eastern shore of Lake Huron by Monday morning. Snow squalls could also extend toward Lake Erie at times.

Northerly winds are expected to shift to northwesterly late Monday into early Tuesday, directing the heaviest snowfall to areas east and southeast of Lake Huron. Environment Canada says there is potential for “very heavy accumulations and intense snowfall rates Monday night into Tuesday morning, particularly if lake effect bands become stationary.”

Snow is expected to taper in intensity by Tuesday afternoon.

Officials warn that travel may become hazardous, with the potential for near-zero visibility and difficult road and walkway conditions. Motorists are urged to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

A special weather statement is in effect for Chatham-Kent and Rondeau Park, with Environment Canada warning of accumulating snow throughout the day.

Between two and five centimetres of snow is expected from early this morning through this evening.

Forecasters say precipitation may begin as rain before changing to snow, and while ground temperatures remain relatively warm, accumulations could be limited on some surfaces.

Motorists are advised to prepare for difficult driving conditions, as the mix of rain and snow may cause slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Poor weather could also contribute to transportation delays.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts and alerts from Environment Canada for updates.
