Betty Mahu

Elizabeth Ullanie ‘Betty’, ‘Ma’, Mahu of Wallaceburg passed away at the age of 87 on Sunday, November 16, 2025.

Betty’s final moments were peaceful and spent surrounded by her loved ones at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

Betty was the daughter of the late George & Madeleine (Tilleman) D’Hooghe, and sister of the late Frank D’Hooghe (Joan). Betty was also the widow of her beloved husband Rene, who passed away in 2012. Betty was a loving mother to Christopher Mahu (Chrissy) and Wendy Mahu-McCreary (Lorne). She is also survived by her dear grandchildren, Trevor, Abby, Renee (Steve), and Mark, as well as her great-grandchildren, Claire and Andrew, and her dog, Jay J.

She was also the beloved special nanny to Richelle.

Betty lived a long and blessed life, cherishing the time she spent with her family and friends, as well as playing golf, euchre, and visiting the casino. She enjoyed crafts, decorating, and hosting holiday meals for her children and their families. She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society, she was the Queen of Archery at the C.B.D. Club, and she once won the bronze medal in golf from the Ontario Senior Games Association. Betty’s loved ones will remember her for her kind soul, her resilience, and her amazingly elaborate holiday table decorations.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a visitation at the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson Street in Wallaceburg from 3 – 6 PM on Wednesday, November 19. The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Holy Family Church in Wallaceburg at 1 PM on Thursday, November 20. Interment to follow at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has kindly requested donations be made in Betty’s honour to the Canadian Cancer Society or Pet and Wildlife Rescue.
