The municipality has been chosen as one of ten communities across Canada to take part in Project UPSTREAM, a two-year national initiative aimed at strengthening violence prevention and community well-being.
Led by the Canadian Centre for Safer Communities and funded in part by the federal government, the project brings together organizations focused on preventing violence, hate and social polarization. Partners include national and international groups committed to trauma-informed practices, community justice, extremist violence prevention and multi-sector collaboration.
Through the initiative, Chatham-Kent will receive support to assess local safety needs, strengthen collaboration across sectors through training and mentorship, and develop community-led efforts that foster safety and belonging.
Municipal officials say the project aligns directly with Chatham-Kent’s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, which prioritizes public safety, youth and family wellness and strengthening community connections.
Updates on the project will be shared through the municipality’s Community Safety and Well-Being Let’s Talk page.
