Driver charged with impaired operation after wheel detaches and strikes police cruiser in Wallaceburg

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A Wallaceburg man is facing impaired driving charges following a motor vehicle incident that caused damage to a Chatham-Kent Police Service cruiser on Margaret Avenue.

Police say that on Dec. 30, 2025, at approximately 5:59 p.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle collision on Margaret Avenue in Wallaceburg. Investigation determined that while an officer was conducting a traffic stop, a wheel detached from a passing vehicle and struck a marked police vehicle, causing damage. No injuries were reported.

As part of the investigation, officers identified the driver of the vehicle from which the wheel detached as a 46-year-old man from Wallaceburg. Police say the driver displayed signs of impairment and officers formed grounds to demand a breath sample. The driver failed an approved screening device test at the scene.

The accused was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service headquarters, where he provided two breath samples, both of which resulted in failures. He was charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs and operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

The accused was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 12, 2026.
