OPP officials allege: Charges have been laid following a dog attack in Essex that left a dog and its owner injured.
Essex County Ontario Provincial Police say officers were called to Laird Avenue at about 7:03 p.m. on Jan. 4, 2026, after receiving a report that two dogs had attacked a dog and its owner.
The victim was taken to a local hospital for assessment. Police say both the owner and the dog suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Following the investigation, a 39-year-old Essex resident was charged under the Dog Owners’ Liability Act with two counts of failing to prevent a dog from biting or attacking a person or domestic animal. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor.
The Essex County OPP is reminding dog owners to be familiar with the Dog Owners’ Liability Act, which requires owners to take reasonable precautions to prevent their dogs from biting or attacking people or other animals, or from behaving in a way that poses a risk to public safety. Police say owners may be held liable if their dog attacks, and they encourage residents to always maintain control of their dogs to prevent injuries.
