Sarnia Police Service officials allege: Sarnia Police have arrested an individual after a high-speed vehicle pursuit and collision in the city on February 24, 2026.
Police responded just after 6 p.m. to Elgin Street following a report of a potentially impaired driver and welfare concern. The caller observed a person in a silver Dodge Caravan behaving erratically, including flailing in the driver’s seat, striking their head on the steering wheel, and repeatedly opening and closing the vehicle door without exiting.
As officers arrived, the vehicle drove away. Concerned for public safety, police activated emergency lights and sirens to stop the van, which failed to comply. The vehicle continued east on Elgin Street, south on Russell Street, and west on London Road, at times crossing into oncoming traffic, before turning north onto Norman Street at a high rate of speed. Officers discontinued the pursuit to reduce risk to the public.
Minutes later, police received a report of a collision involving the same van at the intersection of East and Exmouth streets. The vehicle failed to stop at a red light and collided with another car before continuing east on Exmouth Street.
At 6:16 p.m., a K9 officer located the damaged van in the 500 block of Exmouth Street. The vehicle had significant passenger-side damage, and the airbags had deployed. The driver had fled the scene.
Police canine PSD Vader tracked the driver behind nearby businesses, leading to a closed dumpster where the person was hiding. Officers called out to the individual, who surrendered and was taken into custody.
The driver, 26, was charged with dangerous operation, fail to stop at an accident, and flight from police. Already subject to a release order, the individual was held for a bail hearing and has been remanded in custody, with a scheduled court appearance the following day.
