Special weather statement
Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning that significant rainfall is possible this week across much of southern Ontario, including Chatham-Kent.
In a weather statement issued Monday afternoon, the national weather agency said rainfall totals between 20 and 40 millimetres are possible beginning Tuesday night and continuing through Wednesday. Locally higher amounts could occur in areas that experience thunderstorms.
“Potential for significant rainfall this week. The saturated or frozen ground will have little ability to absorb this rainfall.”
Environment Canada said a series of low-pressure systems moving through the region will bring the rain, raising the risk of localized flooding.
“Heavy downpours may cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”
The agency noted that rainfall warnings may be issued for some areas as the weather system approaches.
Residents are being encouraged to monitor forecasts and alerts issued by Environment Canada.
