An improperly discarded cigarette is believed to have caused a house fire in Chatham on Thursday evening, according to Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services.
Firefighters from Stations 1 and 2 in Chatham responded to a reported structure fire at a single-family, two-storey home on Park Avenue West at approximately 7:31 p.m. on May 14.
Responding apparatus included 1-11, 2-14, 1-14 and Support 1, with 14 firefighters attending the scene alongside a fire inspector assisting with cause determination.
Officials said three occupants had evacuated the home before crews arrived and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters encountered smoke and flames coming from the side of the structure and entered the residence to conduct a search and begin fire suppression efforts.
The fire spread into wall, ceiling and concealed void spaces, making extinguishment more challenging, officials said. Crews were eventually able to contain and extinguish the blaze.
The probable cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and related to improper cigarette disposal.
CK EMS, Chatham-Kent Police Service and utility providers also attended the scene.
