Heat warning remains in effect for Chatham-Kent through Tuesday

A heat warning remains in effect for Chatham-Kent as the first significant heat event of the season is expected to continue into Tuesday.

Environment Canada issued the warning Monday afternoon, forecasting daytime highs between 30 and 32 C with humidex values ranging from 36 to 38. Overnight lows are expected to remain near 20 C before conditions ease Tuesday night.

Officials said the heat could pose health risks to everyone, particularly older adults, people living alone and others considered more vulnerable to heat-related illness.

Residents are being encouraged to check on at-risk individuals multiple times a day, stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Environment Canada said early signs of heat exhaustion can include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue.

“Heat stroke is a medical emergency!” the warning stated. “Call 9-1-1 or your emergency health provider if you, or someone around you, is showing signs of heat stroke which can include red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion and change in consciousness.”

Officials also advised residents to wear lightweight clothing, use air conditioning or fans when possible and seek cooler public spaces such as libraries, community centres or shaded parks if homes become too warm.

Environment Canada reminded residents never to leave children or pets inside parked vehicles and encouraged continued monitoring of local forecasts and alerts.
