Travel measures aligned, Canada announces Ebola response funding amid outbreak concerns

The United States, Mexico and Canada have issued a coordinated statement outlining new aligned public health travel measures for people arriving from African regions most affected by the Ebola virus, while Canada separately announced $8 million in new international assistance funding to support outbreak response efforts.

In the trilateral statement released Wednesday by Global Affairs Canada, the three countries said:

“The United States, Mexico and Canada have announced aligned public health travel measures for individuals coming from African regions at greatest risk from the Ebola virus. This coordinated approach aims to protect our citizens and the millions of visitors, fans, athletes, and tourists expected during the FIFA World Cup 2026™, while maintaining travel and commerce across our borders. The health and safety of every person in the region remains our highest priority as we welcome the world to North America.”

The announcement comes as Canada steps up its international response to Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan.

Global Affairs Canada said the federal government will provide $8 million to support organizations working on containment, surveillance and humanitarian assistance tied to the outbreak. The funding includes $3.5 million to the World Health Organization’s Contingency Fund for Emergencies to support rapid response activities, $2 million to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to enhance surveillance and biosecurity measures, and $1.8 million to the Canadian Red Cross to assist local societies with contact tracing, infection prevention and sanitation support.

An additional $700,000 will be distributed through the Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund, with $350,000 allocated to Oxfam-Quebec and $350,000 to World Vision Canada to provide clean water, sanitation, essential supplies and health services in affected regions.

The government also said it has supported the deployment of Canadian Red Cross experts to assist international response operations in the region.

“The funds are being allocated as follows,” the release stated, before outlining the distribution across international and humanitarian partners.

Canada said the investments build on its broader global health security efforts and long-standing support for infectious disease prevention and emergency response systems.

“Controlling outbreaks of infectious diseases is critical to protecting the health, safety and security of affected communities and the rest of the world,” Global Affairs Canada said, adding that the measures also support efforts to save lives and protect Canadians.

The federal government said it continues to monitor the situation closely in coordination with international partners and will adjust its response as conditions evolve.
