The Ontario Provincial Police laid more than 19,000 traffic and marine charges during a Canada Day week enforcement campaign aimed at improving safety on roads, trails and waterways across the province.
According to preliminary data released Monday, officers issued more than 19,133 charges during the week as increased holiday traffic travelled throughout Ontario.
The charges included 8,603 speeding offences, 1,454 seatbelt violations, 412 impaired driving charges, 311 stunt driving charges, 243 distracted driving charges, 49 helmet-related offences and 11 marine safety equipment charges.
The OPP said safety is a shared responsibility for everyone using roads, trails and waterways and urged motorists, boaters and other travellers to make responsible choices throughout the summer.
Police also thanked drivers and passengers who made safety a priority during the Canada Day week, saying continued safe behaviour can help prevent avoidable tragedies on Ontario’s roads and waterways.
