Residents can safely drop off household hazardous waste for free later this month as part of a municipal collection event.
Household Hazardous Waste Day will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Veolia Environmental Services, 141 Prosperity Way in Chatham.
Items accepted include batteries, paints and solvents, among other materials.
The municipality is encouraging residents to follow what it calls the “BUD” rule — buy only what is needed, use it all up, and drop off the rest at a local site to be recycled, reprocessed or safely disposed of.
Residents are asked to remain in their vehicles during drop-off, as staff will remove the items. Containers will not be emptied or returned.
The collection days are part of a program run by the Resource Productivity & Recovery Authority, an industry-funded recycling initiative aimed at keeping hazardous and special waste out of Ontario’s landfills and waterways.
Additional Household Hazardous Waste Days are scheduled through the fall, including Oct. 13 and Nov. 10, both from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
