Lauretta has called Oaks home for the past two years, but her roots run deep in Walpole Island, where she was born and raised. A proud mother and grandmother, Lauretta spent many years sharing her knowledge as an Ojibwe language teacher and specialist in Walpole Island elementary and high schools. Even today, she remains a passionate advocate for keeping the language strong for future generations.
One of Lauretta’s fondest childhood memories takes her back to autumn on Walpole Island. Each October, she and her grandmother would gather bittersweet plants and make into bouquets to sell anywhere from 35 cents to $1.50, depending on the size. After their work was done, the money they earned would go toward a big family feast, a simple tradition filled with togetherness, hard work and wonderful memories.
