St. Clair Township officials are working to ensure residents are informed and ready to cast their ballots as the municipality introduces online voting for the first time in the 2026 municipal and school board election.
“We recognize that new processes can sometimes be met with hesitation,” said clerk Jeff Baranek. “But internet voting is much easier than many people think, and we are committed to educating and supporting our voters every step of the way to ensure a seamless voting experience.”
Eligible voters can expect to receive their voter information letter by mail during the first week of October. Each letter will contain a unique PIN and instructions for casting a ballot online, and voters will also be required to enter their date of birth to access the voting system. Residents who have not received their letter by Oct. 8 are asked to contact the clerk’s office for assistance. The online voting period runs from Oct. 16 at 9 a.m. to Oct. 26, election day, at 8 p.m.
“We are also hosting several voter assistance centres across the township throughout the 11-day voting period,” Baranek said. “Staff will be available to assist anyone who requires help with the online voting process, and devices will be available on site.” Residents need only bring their voter information letter to participate.
Voter turnout in the 2022 St. Clair Township election, conducted by mail-in ballot, was 39.34 per cent, and Baranek said he would like to see that number much higher this time around.
“We’re really hoping to reach more younger and first-time voters,” he said, “and pass that 50 per cent turnout mark.”
