Update: Mike’s Place fire ruled accidental, caused by electrical issue

Investigators have determined that the fire that destroyed Mike’s Place Restaurant on Queen Street in Chatham last week was accidental in nature and caused by an electrical issue within the building.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service, in partnership with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue, has concluded its investigation into the commercial structure fire, which occurred Sept. 29. No evidence of criminal activity was identified, and the investigation is now considered complete.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services responded to the reported structure fire at approximately 2:03 a.m. that day at the restaurant, located at 564 Queen St. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames visible from the building and immediately began fire suppression operations, bringing the blaze under control before conducting overhaul and extinguishing hotspots. Damage to the property was estimated at approximately $1 million.

While the fire resulted in significant damage to the business, no injuries were reported.

“Due to a devastating fire, Mike’s Place will be closed until we rebuild,” the restaurant posted on social media at the time. “No injuries. Fireman and police officers responded extremely quick.”

The Chatham-Kent Police Service extended its appreciation to members of Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue, emergency services, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and all responding emergency personnel for their efforts throughout the incident and investigation.

“We also wish to express our sincere support to the owners, staff, and everyone affected by this fire,” police said in a statement. “Mike’s Place has been a valued part of the community and we wish all those impacted the very best as they move forward with recovery and rebuilding efforts.”
