Sarnia police seize handgun, drugs in London Line search; Mississauga man charged

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A 49-year-old Mississauga man is facing multiple charges after Sarnia police seized a loaded handgun and drugs during a search warrant in the 1700 block of London Line.

The Sarnia Police Service Drug Unit, with assistance from the Intelligence Unit and Emergency Response Team, executed the warrant on Oct. 6. Officers seized 176.05 grams of methamphetamine, 54.42 grams of cocaine, $1,102.40 in Canadian currency, and a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun with additional ammunition. The estimated street value of the drugs is $16,000.

Investigators determined the accused was subject to a lifetime firearms prohibition at the time of the offence.

He was charged with possessing a prohibited firearm; possessing a firearm while prohibited; possessing ammunition while prohibited; possessing a firearm without being a licensed holder; possessing a firearm knowing he is not a licensed holder; possessing prohibited ammunition; carrying a concealed weapon; carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose; two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, for cocaine and methamphetamine; and possession of property obtained by crime.

Police say they have identified an ongoing trend of individuals travelling from larger urban centres into Sarnia to traffic drugs, often while in possession of firearms. This is the second handgun seized from a Greater Toronto Area-based drug trafficker operating in Sarnia within the last three months.
