Final phase completed for J.G. Taylor Park revitalization in Chatham

The J.G. Taylor Park Revitalization Committee has announced the completion of the final phase of the J.G. Taylor Park Revitalization Project, marking the conclusion of a three-year community effort that has transformed one of Chatham-Kent’s busiest parks.

Completed over five phases, the project expanded recreation, accessibility and community gathering opportunities. Highlights include a new regulation-size basketball court with player seating, modern playground equipment, hard-surfaced accessible pathways connecting all areas of the park, concrete game tables for chess and ping pong, a gaga ball pit, and new benches on hard surfaces around the public pool. The final phase included renovations to the pavilion and new park signage.

The project was supported by Hydro One ward funding, Clarke Construction, CK Ready Mix, John Harris Concrete, the CK Police Service Board, the CK Police Association, Steel Shake and Tile with SBRoofing, and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

The effort began when Frank Parker Jr. recognized the need for a new basketball court in the heavily used park and shared his vision with Deb Veccia, now a retired municipal staff member. From that conversation, the committee came together.

The committee will dedicate the project to the legacy of the Woodstock Industrial Institute, founded on the site in 1908. The new signage and improvements recognize the institute’s history, which was rooted in education, diversity and community.

“This project demonstrates what can be accomplished when community members, businesses, organizations, and local government work together toward a common goal,” said Marjorie Crew, a member of the committee. “The improvements made over the past three years will benefit residents and visitors for generations to come while honouring the rich history and legacy of this site.”

The community is invited to a dedication and recognition event on Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. at J.G. Taylor Park.
