Walpole Island Fire Department urges residents to test smoke detectors

The Walpole Island First Nations Fire Department is reminding residents that working smoke detectors give early warning and precious time to escape during a fire.

The department is urging residents to test their smoke detectors every month, replace batteries once a year or when the alarm chirps, and replace the entire unit every 10 years. Alarms should be installed on every level of a home, inside and outside sleeping areas. If an alarm sounds, residents should get out, stay out and call 911.

Walpole Island residents who need a smoke detector can receive one free of charge from the fire department. Residents can request one by calling 519-627-8879 or through the department’s Facebook page.
