Sarnia school placed in lockdown after unknown person found inside; man charged

Northern Collegiate Institute & Vocational School in Sarnia was briefly placed in lockdown Thursday after an unknown individual was found inside the building.

Sarnia police say they received a report from school staff that an unknown person had been observed inside the school. Officers arrived within three minutes and located the individual outside the school. A 42-year-old Sarnia man was arrested without incident, charged with a Criminal Code offence related to the incident and removed from the property.

The Lambton Kent District School Board said the school was immediately placed in lockdown out of an abundance of caution and in keeping with established safety procedures. The lockdown was lifted once it was confirmed the immediate concern had been addressed.

Police and the board both said there was no threat to students at any time.

“We are grateful to our students and staff for responding calmly and following established safety procedures,” the board said in a statement, thanking the Sarnia Police Service for its prompt response. The board said school staff will continue to support students who have questions or need additional support.
