The future of the OHL in Chatham-Kent is still very much up in the air.
However, a Facebook page has been launched for local residents to show their support for bringing top-tier junior hockey to the community.
“Show your support for the Ontario Hockey League coming to Chatham-Kent by liking this page,” reads the short description on the page, which has gathered nearly 2,500 ‘Likes’ since being started on Facebook on December 19.
Chatham-Kent officials were set to sit down with a “hockey club” this week.
Although details were not disclosed about who the meeting was with, all indications point towards the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League.
Earlier this month, Whalers owner Peter Karmanos told Craig Custance, senior NHL writer for ESPN The Magazine, he’s targeting a small Canadian city to relocate the Whalers.
“Hopefully, Chatham,” Karmanos said.
A new arena in Chatham-Kent would be necessary in order to move forward with an OHL club, multiple reports indicate.
The deadline for an OHL team to apply for re-location is December 31.
