Less than a week after a new ownership group was introduced for the Wallaceburg Lakers, the coaching staff for the club has resigned.

Ritch Kanally, general manager for the Great Lakes Junior ‘C’ Hockey League team, told the Sydenham Current the news came as a surprise.

“Derek Ellis and Ryan Paxton have decided to step down from their coaching positions,” Kanally said.

“The Wallaceburg Lakers wish Derek and Ryan all the best and thank them for the time they have invested. They felt their coaching style would not fit in with the new direction of the team.”

Kanally said he in the very early stages of searching for a new head coach.

“I have no leads yet as to hiring a new coach,” he said.

Kanally added that “despite rumours” the Lakers have not committed to a 16-year-old player.

The Lakers have struggled in recent years, missing the playoffs for five consecutive seasons.

Wallaceburg finished last in the league in 2015/2016, finishing with a 3-37-0 record.
