More spills into the St. Clair River

Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley is not happy about two recent notifications he has received.

Wesley said he got notice from the Ministry of Environment spills action centre about two spills into the St. Clair River by the City of Sarnia this month.

Wesley, who also chairs the Chatham-Kent PUC, told council at Monday’s meeting that the total amount of partially treated sewage spilled into the river equals 530 cubic metres or 1,400,000 gallons.

“This is the drinking water source for Walpole Island First Nation and for Wallaceburg,” he said.

Wesley said one of the spills occurred because of a power outage, and the city of Sarnia has no back-up generator in place.

Wesley added that Sarnia has not built the required capacity in their sewage system either.

“So when we get a heavy rain they just dump it into the St.Clair River,” he said.

Wesley said he will be discussing the issue at the upcoming PUC meeting on Sept. 25 and will provide further updates to council as well.
