Walking bridge work facing further delays

Construction work on the Lou Stonehouse walking bridge is being pushed back even further.

Stephen Jahns, manager of infrastructure and transportation, said the construction likely won’t take place until the spring.

“We have not met the mark with this project,” Jahns told council at Monday nights meeting.

Jahns cited coordination issues with the consultant as one of the reasons for it being pushed back.

“The project will be delayed,” he said.

Jahns said the nature of the work is “sensitive” over the Sydenham River, as a raft is needed.

Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley said he is disappointed.

“We need to hold all consultants to account,” he said.

Wesley said many local business owners and community members had stepped up to donate time and materials to help the project along.

“We had a unique situation in place,” he said. “Everyone is waiting.”

Jahns added the tender packages should be ready by the end of this week, however the pre-fabrication on the steel structure on the bridge is a 16-week process, which is why the work is likely to be pushed to the spring.
