Local girl facing her third battle with cancer

A 5-year-old girl, who has beaten cancer twice already, is facing another battle with leukemia.

Hayden Foulon’s family says a cancer cell managed to survive the stem cell transplant she received on March 13 last year.

She now has been admitted to the children’s hospital in London.

“Hayden’s leukemia is back. And here we are, once again gearing up for another fight with cancer,” Hayden’s family posted on the Go Team Hayden Facebook page.

“We’ve felt a lot of emotions over the past few days – anger and sadness at the top of the list. Hearing that her cancer has returned after all she’s been through has been surreal. And unfair. And heart-breaking. And honestly, it’s been a devastating few days for our family. However, if the past four years have taught us anything, it’s that Hayden is as tough as they come and if anyone can fight this disease (and WIN!) for a third time, it’s her.”

Hayden’s aunt Brianne Petrina, formerly Foulon, told the Sydenham Current a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Hayden’s family.

“The biggest challenge right now is financial,” she said.

“Jon (Hayden’s dad) is continuing to work where possible but Lindsay (Hayden’s mom) will be unable to do so while Hayden is undergoing treatment. Additionally, because Lindsay returned to work for a week before Hayden’s most recent relapse, she is not eligible for EI support from the government.”

She added: “Any financial contributions received would be used to support daily living expenses for the family during treatment and hospital-related expenses (i.e. parking and food during stays). Treatment may also involve an extended stay in the United States… a new and added expense for the family.”

While they currently live in London, Hayden’s dad is originally from Wallaceburg.

Hayden’s family says she has always gotten great care in London, but they are eyeing possible treatments south of the border.

“We are working with doctors to determine the best treatment plan to get our sweet girl better… which may include an extended stay in the USA at some point in the months ahead,” Hayden’s family said.

“This isn’t the news we wanted to share with everyone, but here we are. So many of you have been on this journey with us from the start and we know you love her like we do, so please keep her in your thoughts in the days and weeks to come. They say ‘third time’s a charm’… we’ve got our fingers and toes crossed that it really, really is.”
