Members sought for Sydenham District Hospital Corporation

A Wallaceburg resident is encouraging people to purchase memberships for the Sydenham District Hospital Corporation.

Anne Stewart said it is important to have a local contingent of members, to give Wallaceburg a voice when it comes to the Sydneham Campus of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

“You then have the right to vote at the annual general meeting,” she said. “As citizens of this area and people living in the Sydenham catchment area, we are allowed a say into how the hospital is run.”

Cost is $10 and the deadline is March, 31.

Stewart said she has concerns about some recent decisions made by the current board.

“Rather then to have seven members of a board, who just make decisions based on what the administration of the hospital says,” she said. “What happened with these latest cuts, is our board voted for them.”

Stewart said there are not very many restrictions on who can become a member, as long as they are over 18, live in the catchment area of the hospital and don’t work for the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

“The catchment area is about 20,000 people,” she said. “We have Walpole Island, Wallaceburg, Port Lambton, Sombra.
The annual general meeting is set for June 26, we can have a say into what we want the board to do. We can appoint a board that has Wallaceburg’s interests at heart.

Stewart said they are hoping to get the younger people involved as well.

Application forms are available at the municipal centre in downtown Wallaceburg, at 99.1 CKXS, or by calling Stewart at 519-627-6965.
