Animal control is on the council agenda for the regular meeting taking place tonight (March 24) at the Civic Centre in Chatham.
Staff are proving a handful of recommendations, including extending the lease agreement and contract with Larry Benoit at the Wallaceburg Animal Shelter.
This agreement would be extended for two years, expiring on March 31, 2016.
Benoit would be responsible for Ward 4 (North Kent) as well as Ward 5, Wallaceburg.
Administration is also recommending the contracts being extended for two years with Mark Turcotte in Ward 1, Vicki Kyle of the Glencoe Animal Shelter to handle Ward 3 and the OSPCA to handle Ward 2 (South Kent) and 6 (Chatham.)
Staff is allocating $15,000 to be given to the OSPCA for repairs.
An administration report states the OSPCA have agreed to continue to operate out of the shelter located at 405 Park
Avenue East in Chatham for a further two years as long as the following repairs are made:
– Heating system updated-specific attention to dog kennels/freezing water tap in the back
– Ventilation throughout
– Gaps in walls around pipes and uncovered vents in the dog kennels-repaired
– Replace tub in the kitchen and plumbing required
“Due to it not being feasible to dispose of the Chatham shelter until a new shelter has been built, administration’s recommendation is to renew the lease agreement with OSPCA and all animal control contracts in hopes that at the end of these contracts a new shelter will be built,” Nancy Havens, manager of licensing services states in the report.
Havens will provide a presentation to council tonight.
Other items on the council agenda include:
– A presentation by Jim Hogan, president & CEO of Entegrus Inc., about their business plan activities
– A presentation by Gary Scandlan, director with Watson & Associates Economists Ltd., about water and wastewater development charges.
– And a presentation about the strategic planning committee’s annual report.
