Skating Carnival packs Dresden Arena

It was a packed house at the Dresden Arena on Sunday, March 23 for the annual skating carnival, put on by the Dresden Figure Skating Club.

Sarah Pumfrey, the president of the club, said the kids worked hard preparing for the event.

“This is our culmination of the whole year,” she said. “It’s a chance for the kids to showcase what they have worked on all year and just perform for mom and dad and grandma and grandpa. They love getting dressed up for them and showing off what they have been working on.”

Pumfrey said the club has a wide range of skaters.

“Our youngest skaters are three and our oldest skater right now is 17,” she said. “So in that range we have a whole wide skill set. A lot of them when they first come, they can’t even get off the ice. That’s always the first stepping stone, getting up when we’ve fallen, because that is going to happen. From there it is making sure we can skate smoothly, do some jumps and spins.”

Pumfrey said the Dresden business community always steps up to the plate every year to help.

“We have amazing support from the businesses in town,” she said. “They always stand right behind us and help support this club, because it costs a lot of money to keep this club running, with the ice costs and keeping everything running smoothly. We appreciate everything that they do to help us.”
