With the possibility of a brand new shelter in Chatham becoming more of a reality, Chatham-Kent council rubber stamped a two-year extension for animal control across the municipality.

South Kent Coun. Frank Vercouteren said the building of a new shelter is close to starting.

“Hopefully it can be clarified in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

Vercouteren said the new proposed site is set to be donated by a local developer, about 1,000 feet from Highway 40 along Park Ave. on a five-acre site.

“We’re progressing and things are looking really good for a new shelter,” he said. “Within a year or two, we’ll have a new one built.”

Vercouteren added there has already been a lot of interest in people donating money towards the new shelter, as a fundraising campaign is starting to be organized.

John Norton, director of legal services, said the municipality is accepting donations and any funds collected will be earmarked to the new shelter.

$15,000 was approved for the OSPCA-ran shelter, to do repairs at the facility.

Animal control services for Wallaceburg and Dresden were included  in the two-year extension.
