‘Unusually severe’ winter ripped up C-K roads

A report card for Chatham-Kent road conditions is coming to council in the early spring, in the wake of the long winter season.

Chatham Coun. Doug Sulman said it has been an “unusually severe winter” and some “unusual road repairs” have had to take place.

“Our roads are like Cedar Point roller coasters,” he said. “I haven’t seen a winter like this with the impact it has had with sink holes. There are some streets within Chatham that are destroyed. Our roads are very important with the geography we have.”

Thomas Kelly, general manager of infrastructure and engineering, said the municipality repairs the roads on a priority basis.

“The winter has been extremely difficult,” he said, adding that close to $7 million in additional funds were approved in the budget for his department.

Kelly said a report can be expected to come back in May.
