The hours are set to shrink at the Dresden Post Office.

In a letter sent to Mayor Randy Hope and Chatham-Kent council, Tad Wolanski, the area manager for Canada Post in Sarnia, Chatham and L.A.K.E., said with lettermail volumes declining “we need to make smart choices to maintain local service without becoming a burden on Canadian tax payers.

“Canada Post has a mandate to remain financially self-sufficient,” he said.

Wolanski said Canada Post conducted a review of customer traffic patterns at the Dresden location and determined “we have a very small number of local customers between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Monday to Friday.

“As a result of this review, we will be reducing our hours of operations as of April 21, 2014,” Wolanski said.

The new hours in Dresden will be:

– Monday to Friday – 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

– Saturday – 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Wolanski said postal box customers will have full access to their mail.

“Customers will continue to enjoy access to a full range of postal services and products at this post office,” Wolanski said. “There will be no change to the range of services we offer.”

Wolanski added while they recognize this is a change for the Dresden community, Canada Post remains committed to providing postal services in urban and rural communities across the country.

Hours are also reducing at the Merlin, Wheatley and Highgate locations as well.
