Hot on the heels of a sold out show featuring some of Canada’s biggest musical names, the Wallaceburg and District Council for the Arts is presenting one of the fastest rising young stars on the Canadian music scene.

Irene Torres and the Sugar Devils will play the Jeanne Gordon Theatre on Saturday, May 3 at 8:00 p.m. This follows a highly successful show featuring Lunch at Allen’s, a group composed of four of Canada’s best singer songwriters, including Murray McLaughlan and Ian Thomas.

Torres and her group, the Sugar Devils, have been making a big impression on the Canadian blues and R&B scene over the last few years, playing some of the biggest festivals and appearing regularly on venues like CBC Radio. The band is first-rate and Torres has the power and presence to really make things happen.

The show’s opener will by the Sterling Blues Band, which last appeared at the Jeanne Gordon Theatre one year ago. The band, which features Kim Sterling on vocals and Aug Polowick on guitar, has been busy writing new original music over the winter and will be debuting some of it at the May 3 show.

“This show has all the ingredients to be one of the best we’ve presented,” said Arts Council organizer John Gardiner. “Irene Torres is one of the best young voices in Canada today and she’s definitely on the way up. People who’ve followed the Arts Council over the years will remember us introducing artists like Harry Manx and Suzie Vinnick who’ve gone on to be huge.”

Tickets for the Irene Torres and the Sugar Devils’ show are $25 and may be obtained by contacting the Wallaceburg and District Museum at 519-627-8962. For more information on the show, call 519-627-5978. There will be a cash bar and reserved seating for groups of six or more.
