99.1 is getting a boost

radioThe local radio station in Wallaceburg is about to get a boost.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has approved an application from Five Amigos Broadcasting Inc. to increase 99.1 CKXS’s maximum effective radiated power (ERP) from 1,150 to 3,000 watts.

“This has been a long process and we are very pleased with the results,” said Mike Kilby, president of Five Amigos Broadcasting in a press release. “The CRTC listened to our concerns regarding our signal quality and our listening area. They’ve agreed we should be able to increase our signal strength to better serve our customers.”

It was a two-year process for Five Amigos to receive a decision from the CRTC, as the University of Windsor’s campus station CJAM-FM Windsor (who also operates at 99.1 MHz) cited the increase would cause additional interference to their signal and Five Amigos also received an opposing intervention from Blackburn Radio.

Work is starting right away to add to their existing tower to meet the new requirements.

The changes to the airwaves can be expected by the late summer or fall of this year.
