Big Bike battles the rain in Wallaceburg

A constant rain didn’t damper the spirit for the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike stop in Wallaceburg.

Nick Jacobs, the Big Bike coordinator in Chatham-Kent, said although the numbers were not confirmed, about $5,000 was raised by the seven teams in Wallaceburg.

“We did a lot better than last year,” Jacobs said. “We more than doubled our total.”

Jacobs said he credits Mark Childs, owner of the Black Goose in Wallaceburg, for gathering bike riders.

“We couldn’t have done it without him… he’s an amazing supporter,” Jacobs said, adding that Childs helped feed the Heart and Stroke Foundation volunteers and riders as well.

The team of the “Rowdy Restaurant Riders” featuring riders from Gatsby’s Grill House, James Street Eatery and The Black Goose raised over $1,700 on there own.

“It rained all day, but we still had a lot of fun,” Jacobs added.

Last year a total of $127,000 was raised through the Big Bike fundraiser across Chatham-Kent, he said.

This year the goal is to raise $158,000 across C-K.
