Dresden Raceway will be opening up their season on Canada’s birthday.

“Dresden was approved to start their meet on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 instead of June 29 to take advantage of the holiday and to better address horse supply issues,” read a statement from the Ontario Racing Commission.

Lucille Laprise, president of the Dresden Agricultural Society, said it made more sense to start on Canada Day.

“It’s a perfect day for the opening,” Laprise said. “We’re going to have some fan appreciation going on… it will be a family fun event.”

Laprise said post time will remain at he usual 1 p.m. and the day will feature 10 races.

The Dresden Agricultural Society, who owns the Raceway, is operating the track this season as well.

The operations of the Raceway had been handled by Windsor-based WINRAC fro many years.

Laprise said their group of volunteers are working hard to prepare for the season.

“Everything is starting to fall into place,” Laprise said. “It is a lot of work but we are doing the best we can.”

The remainder of the 11-date season approved by the ORC has remained the same after the slight changes to opening day:
