Staff at D.A. Gordon Public School in Wallaceburg are relieved that no one was hurt, after a large tree branch fell on the school yard about 25 minutes after the final bell at the Wallaceburg school.

“The last day of school for D.A. Gordon students was Wednesday,” said Ben Hazzard, principal at D.A. “We had just released the students onto buses and into the care of their parents and guardians. We were just beginning the process of being done as a school and starting to move. The movers were coming in and this was all happening.”

Hazzard added: “A community member had been riding their bike by and came into the school and said ‘have you seen your tree down?’ This is at about 3:45 p.m. We came out and saw literally half of a tree fallen across one of the basketball courts, crushing one of the basketball nets.”

Hazzard said everyone is thankful no one was hurt.

“Just the timing, it is where we had released butterflies that day, so we’re thankful for that,” he said. “It’s just strange that this all happened on the last day at D.A. Gordon.”

Crews were at the school today cleaning up the mess.
