Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to advise drivers that they should always expect the unexpected and not allow radios, fatigue, conversations or cell phones distract their attention away from the roads.
There are times where wildlife cross our highways creating a hazard for drivers.
There are a number of precautions drivers can take to help avoid a collision with an animal including scanning the road ahead from shoulder to shoulder, and reducing your speed when you observe an animal on the highway. If necessary to stop, do so in a safe location off the highway – never stopping in the center median or live lanes of traffic. At no time should drivers exit their vehicles to assist the birds or animals off the highway as this poses a danger to everyone.
Call police who have the equipment and the ability to safely clear the highway.
Chatham-Kent OPP would like to remind motorists that the most frequent times for wildlife on the roadways is early morning and early evening hours.
Use caution while driving and remain alert to your surroundings at all times.
