Looking to refurbish your living room dining room or bedroom?

Well, Tom and Al’s in Wallaceburg has some solid-wood options for you to consider at their 25 Lisgar Street location.

Solid-wood

“We’ve got a new solid wood company to us that is made in Berlin Ohio, the company is called Palettes by Winesburg,” said Shawn Moore, manager at Tom and Al’s. “ It’s an Amish run company, third generation, and this generation is a little more progressive. They use some modern technology to cut chair rails, stuff like that. Then everything still goes to hand finishing, hand building.

Moore added: “These guys use 100 per cent of every tree they cut all the way through. They clear their own lots. They pick and choose, they cut their own trees. They use seven species of wood. They use the saw dust to run the kiln and furnaces. Same with the wood chips, tree bark, pieces of wood you can’t use for furniture because of knots… they use pallets both for domestic and exporting. They literally use everything that comes off that tree.”

Moore said as far as options go, the sky is the limit with these guys.

“There is about 50 stain colours you can use, you can two-tone,” he said. “The size options are amazing. Every chair has about nine different options with it. So every chair style you can have made: arm chair, bar stool, swivel stool, rocking chair. You can truly have some fun and build your dream dining set or bedroom set. Just absolutely gorgeous. All solid hardwood. The most common being oak or maple, but they also do hickory, walnut, cherry.”

Moore added: “From a $1,499 all solid-wood 48-inch table and chairs up to the biggest dining room set you want, these guys can do it. It doesn’t get much more local, they’re four hours away in Ohio.”

Canadian-made furniture

“Most of our upholstery is made by a company called Comfort Style out of Toronto, very nice family run company,” Moofe said. “The family has been in the furniture design industry as designers and builders for 30 years. The quality is top notch, the tailoring is top-notch, a ton of fabric selections, you can customize seat-firmness, different size frames. The delivery times have been exceptional, in four weeks it’s usually on the truck and here for custom orders.

Moore added: “They are our mainstay here in the store. They are a great company, I can talk to the dad, I can talk to both sons that are running the place. They’re just a very family-oriented business and they get it. They’ve been builders, they’ve been retailers. They understand the business. They’re not some corporation… these guys get it, they care.”

Moore said they have other local options as well.

“We also have Sofa By Fancy.. they’re kind of our entry level company,” she said. “I can get most styles of sofa from them starting at about $699 for a Canadian-built product with fabric choices. Leather vinyl comes in under $1,000 for a couch. Once again Canadian-made.”

Moore added: “Our reclining chairs, we carry two brands Elran, which is ran in Quebec, and Best Furniture, which is made in the U.S. They do not import their products from anywhere, they are home grown and built in the States and in Canada.”

Moore said Tom and Al’s try to stay as domestic as possible.

“With furniture it is not that easy to do and be competitive,” he said. “We’ve spent a long time looking up the right companies to be able to do this with. It took some learning, but we’ve found them and we’re staying with them. If I find one that works, I stay with it. Over time as you build a relationship and it gets you out of trouble when you need it. If I need to get a hold of someone, I can. It’s not like going through a corporation phone directory, I have direct numbers to get who I need to.”

Moore added: “I also work with LeatherCraft – they have stepped into fabrics, just building a great solid set. Same Leather Craft, hard wood frames, spring construction, everything they’ve been known for… they really have high quality fabric now along with the leather.”
